Davis U16s secure championship crown in style
THOMAS Davis were crowned U16 C hurling champions on Saturday afternoon as they overcame Naomh Barrog in Kilbarrack on a scoreline of 1- 15 to 1-9.
On a very windy and wet day Thomas Davis got off to a bright start with captain Jack O’Connor (0-10, 4f) leading the way with a few very good scores after some great team play.
With the Davis midfield duo of Daire Tipping and Kyle Byrne getting on top from early on along with Jamie Staunton and Ben McDonnell in defence, Davis took a five-point lead at the break 0-7 to 0-2.
Barrog were aided by the strong breeze in the second half but failed to capitalize on it as Davis struck the all-important goal in the 45th minute as target man full forward Johnny Connors pounced on a high ball in to bury the ball into the top corner of the Barrog net.
Kyle Byrne continued to battle hard in the middle third as himself and Daire Tipping chipped in points along with Jack O’Connor with Luke Collins winning some good primary possession from the puckouts.
Barrog never gave up and battled hard late on, but with goalie Fehin Sinnot in fine form along with all the Davis defence who stood firm, Barrog could only manage one late goal to reduce the gap to six points in the end.
Jack O’Connor was named man of the match and collected the trophy as team captain.
